Inviting my/the character to Hell
By: Eugenia Camargo

In Clockwork orange, the main character, Alex, is part of a group of “malchicks”, they call themselves ”droogs” or “drogos”. They all terrorize people for fun, we have Alex as the narrator of his own story and his actions are always triggered by evilness. He fits in several circles of Dante’s Inferno.

Alex has this idea in his head in which he is the leader of the “drogos”, and for some reason he thinks the others are aware of this. He likes situations that are very “horrorshowish”, for his personal entertainment. Alex manipulates everyone around him. That’s why I chose Judecca as the first circle I would place him in. Judecca is the circle for traitors with benefactors. Alex receives money from his “pe” and “em”, they give him education and a home, they are his benefactors. The poor “pe“ and “em” are lied upon and manipulated constantly by our dear Alex. Before the treatment Alex receives to become a good citizen, he tells his “em” that he is sick and she makes him a “chaz of chai” leaves breakfast on the oven and leaves to work worried for her little “nadsat” which means teenager. What she doesn’t know is that Alex goes out only to “tolchock” some  “chellovecks” in the “kishkas”, or in the “yarbles”, or even in the “oozy”.

Alex is peculiar in many ways, he us a genius for music, self-thought and a big lover of classics. Nevertheless he uses music to motivate his violence, that’s one of the reasons he fits on the 7th circle the violent.  He killed an old “devotchka”, because she was not afraid of him, so he is a murderer.

Alex would be welcomed to the 8th circle (Fraud) with open arms as well; he steals, seduces, and is a hypocrite. He goes every night to someone’s house breaks in and terrorizes them then steals money and pricy belongings. Once he intoxicated two young “ptistsas” after seducing them and convincing them to go to his room, finally he gave them the old “in-and-out” treatment he loved so much, very “horrorshow” he would say. He also attacked his “drogo” Dim when he was defenseless and apologized to him even when he wasn’t sorry which is being hypocrite. These are just a few examples, but they are enough.

He has this instinct that shows the reader he is capable of anything if it benefits him and only him. Last but not least, I would place Alex in Atenora the circle for traitors to their homeland. Contributing to the chaos of his country, making it a bigger dystopia, sucks the so longed and wanted peace of his homeland.

Alex realizes a sadly late that his behavior comes from the silliness of uneducated youth. Alex would fit in 3 main circles of Dante’s Inferno, circle nº 9, nº 8 and nº 7. Thankfully Alex doesn’t just realize his mistakes he gets punished harshly throughout the book, that all expatiators see with our own “glazzies” we almost pity Alex for some chapters but I guess it was poetic Justine in the end.
